January 20 – Courageous energy: meeting the challenges of our time

By | January 20, 2025

Dear Friends,

Joseph Goldstein describes energy (viriya) as the power to act–it encompasses strength, perseverance, and the courage to meet challenges with determination and skillfulness. This courageous energy sustains our practice, helping us abandon the unwholesome and nurture the skillful, both within ourselves and in the world.

Joseph highlights that viriya is not about avoiding difficulties but engaging with them wisely. Courageous energy empowers us to face life’s challenges–not with resistance or despair, but with resolve and clarity. Yet, it also requires discernment, knowing when to persist and when to step back to build the strength needed to reengage skillfully.

This week, as the world navigates significant transitions, along with on-going challenges, this teaching feels especially relevant. We are all called to bring our energy to wholesome and skillful purposes. Whether through acts of kindness, advocacy, or steadfast mindfulness, this courageous energy enables us to contribute to a more compassionate and just world.

I invite you to reflect:

  • How can you channel your energy into skillful and wholesome actions?
  • What supports you in cultivating courage and resilience in the face of challenges?

May these reflections inspire the strength and clarity needed to meet this moment with wisdom and care.

With good wishes,
Andrea
