Dear Friends,
In exploring the third effort of cultivating wholesome states that have not yet arisen, I invite you to listen to a talk by Gil Fronsdal that weaves this teaching together with the brahma vihara of mudita (appreciative joy).
In this talk, Gil highlights how the proactive effort to cultivate wholesome states can emerge from a foundation of love–love for oneself, others, and the world. He explores the dual nature of desire, emphasizing the beauty of desires that arise from care and peace rather than stress or pain.
A key theme is the practice of mudita–finding joy in the happiness of others. By celebrating inner and outer beauty, we can deepen our appreciation of the present moment and foster a sense of interconnectedness. With mindfulness awareness, we can open our hearts to joy and beauty, allowing skillful states to arise and take root.

Whether you listen to the talk or recall your own experience, here are some questions you can reflect on:
- How does the idea of cultivating joy in the happiness of others resonate with your practice?
- Are there small, wholesome desires or intentions in your life that arise from a place of care and love?
- How might mindfulness support you in nurturing joy and interconnection?
May this practice inspire greater joy and connection in your life. As always, I love to hear your thoughts and reflections.
With good wishes,
Andrea
This morning, mudita has arisen quite naturally as I read of the ceasefire in Gaza. This lesson is so timely.
May this spirit of appreciative joy continue to nourish our hearts and our collective wish for lasting peace in the world.
